CPA Board Approves Bylaws Change to Add New RxP Chair

During CPA's May 19, 2023 board meeting, it was approved that the chair of the newly created RxP Division hold a seat as a Board of Director. The chair of the RxP Division will be appointed by the CPA President for the term of 1 year (July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024). After this time, the RxP Chair shall become an elected position serving a (3) three-year term by the voting Members of the Association.

In order to add this board position representing the interests of the RxP Division, the Board of Directors agreed to decrease the number of At-Large positions by 1 (one), thereby keeping the total number of voting Directors at 17 (seventeen) per the bylaws.

CPA Celebrates RxP and Honors Key Players

CPA members and guests celebrated the passage of the Prescriptive Privileges Bill (HB23-1071) into law on the evening of Friday, April 21st 2023 with a celebration on the DU campus following CPA's Spring Symposium. The passing of this bill was a monumental accomplishment worthy of a celebratory party.

Awards were presented to Jin Lee, PsyD, MSCP, BCB and Healthier Colorado. Other awardees were Rep. Judy Amabile, Rep. Mary Bradfield, Senator Cleave Simpson and Senator Steve Fenberg. Unfortunately, the legislators were unable to attend the party due to evening sessions.

Jin Lee, PsyD, MSCP, BCB, was given the "President's Award" for outstanding service to psychology. Jin began working on this campaign about 4 years ago, spending weekends, lunch breaks and evenings on the phone with CPA's lobbyist, Jeannie Vanderburg, figuring out their strategy. Jin did all the research, put together a thoughtful proposal, garnered support from CPA leadership and membership, and gathered a group of stellar psychologists and stakeholders to support her efforts. Without Jin's hard work and commitment, this bill would simply not have passed.

Healthier Colorado was given the "Friend of Psychology" award for their support and hard work to allow psychologists to prescribe in Colorado. Healthier Colorado is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to raising the voices of Coloradans in the public policy process to improve the health of our state’s residents. Last year, Healthier Colorado generously agreed to support our efforts to pursue prescriptive authority and we couldn’t have done it without them. They brought a professional communications team, helped us prepare witnesses and do research as needed. Their amazing policy, communication and lobbying team were integral to getting this bill across the finish line.

Description: Take a look back at CPA's plan to pursue legislation to grant prescriptive authority (RxP) to licensed psychologists with advanced degrees and training in prescribing psychotropic medications to increase access to appropriate mental health treatment for Coloradans. As part of the strategic planning, CPA is planning to provide a series of webinars targeting the education about the historical background of RxP and the future direction for this needed effort. In this CE credit webinar, we have two prescribing psychologists from New Mexico, which is the first state in the nation to grant RxP to psychologists. We are excited to hear from the experts on their experience with the legislative process in New Mexico and how we can incorporate their success into our needs in Colorado.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the current status of granting prescriptive authority to specially trained psychologists (RxP) in Colorado
  • Discuss the historical background and current status of RxP in New Mexico
  • Discuss the future direction of the RxP effort in Colorado and beyond
This webinar is available to both members and non members & offers 1 CE on-demand in the CPA Learning Center. Click below to register today!
