Addressing Climate Change: State and Local Policy Opportunities

Virtual

Date: Thursday, May 2, 2024
Time: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. MDT

REGISTER HERE

Please join APA and Div. 34 (Society for Environmental, Population, and Conservation Psychology) for a webinar, “Addressing Climate Change: State and Local Policy Opportunities” on May 2, from 12:00 - 1:00pm EDT. Through presentations and discussions with two experienced climate leaders, this webinar will provide attendees with an understanding of relevant state and local policy mechanisms for addressing climate change, as well as information and skills for engaging policymakers at these levels.

As stated in APA’s recent report “Addressing the Climate Crisis: An Action Plan for Psychologists,” responding to the climate crisis is an essential task, requiring the participation of all fields and sectors of society. Unless major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are made quickly, climate-driven adverse impacts on human health, well-being, and equity will intensify. Psychologists are uniquely qualified to take action themselves to promote policies and programs for mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Advocacy Alert: Act Today to Shape the Future of Behavioral Health Services!

Please take 2 minutes today to influence 2 key policies that will shape funding for and access to behavioral health services in 2025 and onwards! Both Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are currently reviewing proposals that could strengthen behavioral mental health services in Medicare, and in turn create positive ripple effects throughout the health care system.

Here are the two proposals – officials need to hear from you now to ensure they become a reality:

  • CMS: The annual proposed rule for the Physician Fee Schedule contains many overwhelmingly favorable proposals for services provided by psychologists. It sets the benchmark for how other insurance programs cover psychological services. All members of the psychology community have a stake in this rule. The proposed rule includes coding surrounding digital mental health, training for caregivers, privacy for providers and more!
  • Congress: H.R. 2474, a bill in the House, would provide long-overdue support to the dwindling workforce of Medicare providers. These providers on average receive payments that are 26% lower today than they were in 2001. The bill would tie the annual payment update to the Medicare Economic Index, which reflects changes in both provider expenses and broader economic trends.

You can more learn about the details of these proposals and send a separate, pre-written message to each audience here! The template messages can be personalized.

These proposals are a direct result of advocates like you speaking up for behavioral health services by weighing in on federal proposals over the past few years. Help us keep this momentum going and make a difference in your communities - please join our efforts to strengthen mental health services today!
