Substance Use Disorders: What Psychologists Need to Know

Description: This training will provide information on the acute and chronic effects and consequences of psychoactive substances commonly used by clients, patients, and consumers. The training will introduce participants to the epidemiology, neurobiology, and behavioral indicators of substance misuse. This training will conceptualize Substance Use Disorder (SUD) diagnostic and assessment considerations in identifying functional impairments. The training will detail intoxication and withdrawal symptoms for a range of commonly-misused substances and provide information on medical consequences of use. The training will also address some of the myths and misconceptions SUD that feed into stigmatizing beliefs, and strategies for reducing stigma. Finally, the training will provide recommendations for treatment consideration that psychologist can use when working with clients who use substances.

  • Specify at least three practical treatment implications of impaired brain regions in SUD.
  • Identify at least three acute intoxication and withdrawal effects of alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and cannabis.
  • Describe how to resolve diagnostic issues of primary versus substance induced mental health disorders.
  • List three negative ways stigma impacts people with substance use disorders.
  • Provide three examples of stigmatizing language and three examples of alternative affirming language.

Thomas Freese, Ph.D

Thomas E. Freese, Ph.D. is Co-Director of the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs. He is Co-Director of the SAMHSA-funded Pacific Southwest (HHS Region 9) Addictions Technology Transfer Center. Formerly, Dr. Freese served as ISAP Director of Training for 20 years. He has conducted trainings on a wide variety of topics related to sub stance use disorders and their treatment, culturally responsive care, and implementing integrated treatment. Dr. Freese has been a featured presenter at conferences and meetings, and has developed and conducted trainings across the US and internationally.

 



The Colorado Psychological Association (CPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
 

 


 

 Today’s Marijuana and the Adolescent Brain

Description: We will provide a strong foundation of what is today’s marijuana. We will highlight the importance of THC potency and its damaging effects on adolescent brain development as well as scientific evidence of mental health concerns for Colorado youth. We review the variety of appealing and easily hidden products available in both the recreational and medical marijuana markets as well as address the 18-20 year old loophole which is affecting Colorado high schools. We will focus on needed protections and education for Colorado kids, schools, parents and trusted adults. A 15-minute Q & A will follow the workshop.

Henny Lasley, 
Co-founder and Executive Director of One Chance to Grow Up, an initiative of Smart Colorado

Henny was appointed by the State Marijuana Enforcement Division to serve on the stakeholder group focused on rulemaking for labeling and warning statements of marijuana products and social consumption. She speaks locally, nationally and internationally to health professionals, policymakers and parents sharing Colorado’s lessons learned about today’s marijuana and the impacts on kids. Henny has a B.B.A and B.A. in history from Southern Methodist University.
