This talk focuses on the need for Prescribing Psychologists to provide p harmacotherapy in the US prison system. The need for mental health care in the prison system is no surprise to most people; as many as 37 percent of i nmates have been diagnosed with a mental illness and close to 70 percent of inmates report not receiving mental health care while incarcerated. As man y as 50 percent of female inmates were provided one or more psychotropic me dications while incarcerated, a rate that is six times the general populati on. Once prescribed a medication, it can be months before an inmate can be seen by a psychiatrist to adjust or change medications.
Correctional facilities are rife with mentally challenged inmates who need psychotropic medicines as part of their treatment. Join this webinar to hear Dr. Judith Steinman discuss the importance and unique challenges of administering psyc hopharmacological agents in incarcerated environments.
