DescriptionPsychologists have always been at high risk for burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary stress as a result of their jobs. For many mental health professionals, the COVID-19 pandemic's unique personal and professional challenges have translated into significant elevations in burnout-related symptoms and decreases in coping. In this webinar, you will learn about burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary stress, as it relates to our role in connecting with clients. You will learn how to self-assess your own levels of burnout, and most importantly, leave with some concrete strategies to prevent and mitigate the negative impacts of burnout/compassion fatigue.

Learning Objectives:
  • Define and contrast burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary stress.

  • Describe and utilize two self-assessment tools to measure burnout and compassion fatigue.

  • List at least eight (8) physical, cognitive, behavioral, and/or emotional indicators of burnout and/or compassion fatigue.

  • Describe and apply at least five (5) concrete self-care strategies designed to prevent and mitigate the impacts of burnout/compassion fatigue.

Speaker:  Heidi Ardern, Ph.D.

Heidi Ardern, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Golden, Colorado. In addition to co-authoring book chapters on trauma and domestic violence, she has presented internationally and domestically on trauma-related topics. She has devoted much of her professional time to working with survivors of trauma in correctional, medical, inpatient psychiatric, and outpatient settings. She is the chair of the Disaster Resource Network committee of the Colorado Psychological Association, volunteers on the Disaster Mental Health team with the American Red Cross and has conducted psychological evaluations of refugees for a human rights clinic. Dr. Ardern has taught graduate-level courses in ethics and diagnosis, as well as numerous occupational health courses in corporate and hospital settings.
